ARTIST PROFILE

The who of it

I was born in San Francisco in the mid 1960s. I was raised in the Pacific Northwest. I have lived on both coasts.

In my early 20s I fell in love with photography. I also pursued a career in music. Later in life I became curious about the creative process, the act of making, and the universal human search for meaning.

These things fascinate me: what happens in the mind and heart of the artist while making and what happens in the mind and heart of the person beholding an artwork. The 'what's happening' is the most interesting part of it all.

ON PAINTING

A painting usually has its origins in an inspiration that comes from a visual insight or by thinking about or looking at art that already exists. The resulting impuse to paint seems as natural as how a yawn is contagious.

I try not to think too much while painting. Paying attention to what is happening with a curious and observant attitude keeps me out of the way to whatever extent is possible. The process feels a bit like navigating familiar territory at night, without any landmarks.

The decision making is impulse driven, has a definite rhythm, and is guided by a general sentiment while holding a specific aesthetic goal in mind.

The result of that process is the artwork. The physical painting is a remnant or document of an exploration of possibilities and a desire to bring something new into the world.
